INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTS: Fr. David Nazar, Rector at the Pontifical Oriental Institute with Matt Bird

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 00:00

So we’ve heard about the father. How about we talk a bit about the man? Sound good? Since you were a child, I’ve heard that you’ve been in music enthusiasts. Tell me about that.

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute:00:09

Well, I even go back before I was born, because Ukrainians are singing all the time and they’re singing in harmony. So even in the womb I was listening to harmonies. So friends of ours had two pianos and I asked, I went up and asked to go. We have one of their pianos. My parents were embarrassed. They said sure. So I was maybe 11 years old and I started playing piano in high school. I played the bassoon in the clarinet directed orchestras and choir as a studied voice a little bit. So that’s always been a big part of my life. Then I got into, when I entered the Jesuits, we formed a rock band in Gonzaga at the spoke Spokane, Washington called the Bay of pigs. So there’s all music has always been there thematically in my life. Yeah.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 00:58

You know, actually, I remember that, so I’m from Washington state and I got to tell you, I, I can kind of one hand and then more times I’ve heard the word Spokane, Washington, and this is probably the first time I’ve heard it internationally. So thank you. And I’m sure we were back home. You as well. I’m sure it’s the first time I said about ever been uttered at a Rome. You’re also a bit of a health enthusiast.

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 01:28

Yeah. So younger, played a lot of sports, but when you enter sort of a religious life as a Jesuit, you’re moving around a bit. So I started getting into sports that I could handle sort of by myself. So I jogged, I did weights or swam. I did all these things that I could do on my own. So even still today at the age of 363, I do a good maybe hour and a half of exercise a day.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 01:54

That’s terrific. Let’s change it up a little bit. Let’s go to some of the, some of your favorite things. Tell usabout some of your favorite books.

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 01:59

You know, that’s going to just be so huge and broad. I’m going to say a book that it’s Bernard Lonagan’s insight. It’s the analysis of cognitive structure. You said, how can this be fun? But it’s one of those books that clarifies what you’re thinking and what you’re not thinking, what comes out of it, a logical, intuitive sense of reality. And what is sort of a fantasy in yourself. That’s certainly one, a great book, a novel, is Fugitive Pieces, which sort of talks about an immigrant child putting the pieces of his life together, which I think is such a relevant book for today. I have a lot of books on the, sort of politics in the middle East, even by American military people. But the latest book that ex that read, which was written by a Harvard business school Professor Emerita, uh, called surveillance capitalism, which deal sorted with the downside of information culture, whether it’s Facebook and Google and collecting of private information at all. So those kinds of sort of socially analytical things I really love.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 03:15

Hmm. Excellent. Those are, I haven’t read the first two, but I’ve actually, I believe I’ve caught a snippet of the last one. And I have one for you. I might send your way called The Transhuman Code by David Fergusson. It’s terrific and I’ll send it to you. So, three favorite movies?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 03:38

Three favorite movies. One of my all-time favorite movies is “Amerchords.” Now it’s an Italian movie, but done by Fellini. But it’s where he goes back into his memory as a child and forgives all of the craziness he did. Another one remains for me; a strong movie is “Network” it’s from 1973. It’s Faye Dunaway and all these people, but it’s about the commercialization and the lying quality of mass media. And it’s one of those movies that it shouldn’t be relevant today, but you look at it and you say, this still make sense today. There’s other movies would be like “Ex Machina” these things that are dealing with very current ways of reconceiving the person through analytics and into metrics and showing also the poverty of that kind of thing.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 04:29

Okay. How about some main commercial movie?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 04:31

A commercial? “Ex Machina” was a commercial movie, “Network” was.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 04:42

3 favorite musicians or artists, bands?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 04:46

Let’s see. Let’s see. Today, I really like Sarah Barellis. There’s these couple of Croatian guys that have done a great thing on the internet called the Two Cellos. So they do all sorts of wild thing, rock music as well as classic music and it’s got a lot of fun, a lot of fun in it. I still like Michael Buble who brings out kind of stuff in the past, but it’s stuff that’s got rhythm and got heart. I mean, for Sarah Barellis and the Two Cellos, it’s got humor, it’s got joy in a difficult time that we’re living through it. Playfulness, but they’re talking about things of soul are playing from the soul and that’s what sort of connects with me.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 05:25

We’re going to change things up a little bit. What way to do is one word, one word responses. What’s your favorite color?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 05:35

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 05:52

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 05:59

Something nobody knows. In the office, coffee cups. I will not use the same coffee cup every day. I will rotate them. So I use all six equally. So in six days I would use each cup once.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 06:18

That’s fascinating. Coffee or tea?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 06:21

Coffee

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 06:23

Still or sparkling?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 06:25

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 06:29

Night or day?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 06:31

That’s interesting. Probably night.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 06:37

What makes you smile?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 06:39

A conversation like this? The unexpected.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 06:48

As we wrap this up, what would you like to tell people today?

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 06:58

Hang in there. It’s going to be fine. Hang in there.

Matt Bird – Show Host, Traders Network Show: 07:03

I think that’s all for today. Thank you very much.

Fr. David Nazar, SJ – Rector, Pontifical Oriental Institute: 07:06
